Practical tools for conservation-Important Bird Areas Field Guide

For over thirty years, the Zambian Ornithological Society (ZOS) has had a serious and long-term commitment to carrying out scientific and educational work on Zambia’s birds and their habitats. In Zambia, as elsewhere, some bird species are threatened by habitat degradation, hunting and poisoning. A few species are extremely rare and efforts to protect them must continue. The society, in conjunction with Birdlife International, co-ordinates and sponsors academic research into the status of Zambia’s birds.

WildiZe was able to fund the development of The Important Bird Area (IBA) guide and in doing so has helped provide another practical tool for conservation and education of both locals, tourists and the international community of ornithologists.

FAST FACTS:

Zambia is a landlocked country in southern Africa, with a tropical climate and consists mostly of high plateau. it is the 39th-largest country in the world (after Chile) and slightly larger than the US state of Texas. Zambia is drained by two major river basins: the Zambezi basin in the south covering about three-quarters of the country; and the Congo basin in the north covering about one-quarter of the country. A very small area in the north-east forms part of the internal drainage basin of Lake Rukwa in Tanzania.
