FAST FACTS:

Kalacha, in the Chalbi Desert, for centuries offered, in addition to its water sources, valuable pastures around  which  Gabra and other pastotorial tribal herds nourished.
But  of late, the cycles  of drought  have been accelerating, the pastures are under pressure, and the herds are dying of hunger.
These degraded lands are also starting, in human terms,  abandoning their nomadic lifestyle  to take advantage of food aid.  In the process they become environmental refugees, losing their identity.
