He has never known the full details of how he [read more...]

Transformation and Aid in Africa - The way I see it

June 7, 2010, 4:49 pm at 4:49 pm by Pishai

Personal transformation often implies a major shift in character underpinned by new thinking and acting in pursuit of a recognized vision. When individuals share the same vision, thinking and acting, communities/societies are transformed.

In donor aid interactions, the understanding is that the vision, thinking and actions of the donor are shared by the aid recipient. In Africa, for example, the donor’s vision is and has been to eradicate poverty, hunger and inequality and increase access to basic services such as health, education and economic opportunities. In other words, [read more...]

Bushlog: A.W.A (Africa Wins Again).

May 11, 2010, 1:11 pm at 1:11 pm by Eli Weiss

April 28- May 11
There are ants streaming out of my computer. Could make things very interesting indeed if they decide to encamp. On the other hand I'm laughing so hard at the absurdity of it all. It's so hot and humid and rainy I haven't been dry for days. Have you ever sat there in the heat, hair wringing wet, head bowed, watching your shins and kneecaps leak sweat while ants crawl out of your computer? Pishai says to put out some salt and they'll go to it. Salted Apple covered by warranty? I may yet [read more...]

Bushlog: Mkomazi National Park… When Fortress Conservation Works

May 11, 2010, 12:35 pm at 12:35 pm by Eli Weiss

• It's all about collaboration. That's what WildiZe does best, and that's what will be necessary to be successful in this time of shrinking resources. WildiZe will take your investment (ie. donation) and make it grow by partnering with others to achieve results that could not be achieved by any one organization.
• The reintroduction is not the end of the story. The rhinos were originally extirpated or reduced because of habitat degradation and poaching. You can't bring back the animals without reducing the threats or else you will be right back in the same situation. The work [read more...]

SOAPBOX: Why WildiZe Methods Work

May 11, 2010, 12:33 pm at 12:33 pm by Eli Weiss

I don't often toot my own horn, but it's time to say this. WildiZe funds those projects that nobody else will fund. Why? Because I have a knack of seeing the long picture and understanding critical stages along the way, that without which the funding of these little bits here and there, the long view would take even longer. So far, we've operated on a budget of about $300,000 a year. This needs to grow, and it would certainly be good of all of you enjoying these posts, to donate a dollar or two, so we can keep on going. Bushlog: Dear Bill Gates—What didn’t cost a billion dollars…

May 11, 2010, 12:10 pm at 12:10 pm by Eli Weiss

April 24-28th, Tsavo West: Met up with Danny Woodley, Sr. Warden, Kenya Wildlife Service- http://www.kws.org/about/index.html Kamboyo HQ, at Severin Camp and we had a great time catching up. He filled me in on politics, Land Management and Wildlife Plan that's incorporated into the new draft constitution- there's pros and cons to both, but what it needs first of all is to get passed. It sounded like a round of our recent congress, or perhaps better put, our recent US politics are reminding me more and more of a [read more...]

Bushlog: When Foreign Aid Doesn't Work...

May 11, 2010, 10:59 am at 10:59 am by Eli Weiss

April 20-23: I'm in Tsavo, with Peter Liech. He and I were in Kalacha and Loiyangalani in 2006. It's good to see him again, and we've picked up our conversations as tho no time has passed. He's the Director now of Nyambok, a scholarship organization that focuses on primary and secondary aged school children. In 2006 we'd discussed Nyambok's system, the scholarships were based on need, vs. WildiZe's system, where the award is based on qualifications. I'd provided our scholarship application to Peter, and by the next year they had adopted many of our standards, the [read more...]
