A zebra's stripes help protect it from predators... Do you know what a predator is?

How do zebra's stripes protect them from lions?

When a whole bunch of zebras ( a herd!) start running because they smell those lions..all their stripes in motion make it hard for the lion to pick out a single zebra!

And . . . There is another thing scientists have discovered about a zebra's stripes! We all know that when we wear black in the hot sun, we get hotter, and when we wear white, it keeps us cooler. Scientists think that the air flowing between a the black and white stripes creates a current that helps keep the zebra cooler.. it's like carrying around a personal fan!

Also, each Zebras stripes are unique - just like you! Stripe patterns are how they tell each other apart! A zebras stripes are are their fingerprints. A baby zebra must learn to recognize it's mothers stripes before it can do anything else, otherwise it would get lost!

What is one thing both cheetahs and leopards have?

• • • SPOTS• • •

Can YOU see how are their spots different?

Leopard spots have two colors.. they are 'rosettes'- black on the outside, and yellowish on the inside. A Cheetah's spots are little black solid circles that actually feel softer and are raised up from the rest of their fur

• find the cheetah and leopard spots on this page •

What are some other differences between cheetahs and a leopards?

  • Leopards are bigger than cheetahs, and they can take down bigger prey. They can take their prey up into trees to protect it from other predators that might steal their meal!
  • Leopards are shy animals and usually live solitary lives
  • Leopards are nocturnal, they prefer to hunt at night
  • Cheetahs are the fastest land mammal! They can reach speeds up to 65 miles per hour! Why do you think they are so fast? Because the animals they hunt for food are fast too!
  • Cheetahs bodies are lean and built for speed.. they don't have much fat on them at all.. this also makes it hard for them to run for a long time.
  • Cheetahs are diurnal, they hunt during the day
  • Cheetahs claws don't retract, they are used instead for traction when they run, and their tails are flat and act like a rudder for steering sharp turns so they can quickly follow fast prey

What are these?

YES! These are LIONS! Lions are predators

Predators are animals that hunt other animals to survive. We know it's hard to watch a cheetah or a leopard or a lion kill another animal, but if they didn't do this, then they wouldn't be able to live at all. Nature keeps the balance of predators to prey animals in fewer predators than the animals they eat
