Throughout Africa ranchers and pastoralists trying to protect their livestock, often poison the carcasses of cattle killed by lions with the pesticide carbofuran. They leave these tempting but deadly ‘meals' to attract predators. Unfortunately, it indiscriminately kills everything that comes into contact with it, which in this case, is a family of hungry lions. Poisoning is just one reason that Panthera Leo is endangered, facing the very real threat of extinction in our lifetime. Population estimates show that lion numbers across Africa have dropped from over 400,000 to just 20,000 over the past 20 years. If this decline continues, 10 years from today there may be no more lions left in the wild.
